Glossary

Page 131

Edison base fuses

15, 20, and 30 amp fuses with the same style of base as incandescent bulbs

effecƟve voltage

a value of an AC sine wave voltage with the same heaƟng effect as an equal value of DC voltage;

Eeff = Epeak X 0.707

electrical charge

a basic property of elementary parƟcles of maƩer; a charge that can be either posiƟve or negaƟve;

like charges repel and unlike charges aƩract

electrical degree

one 360th of an alternaƟng current or voltage cycle

electricity

energy produced through the flow of electrons from one atom to another

electromagnet

a magnet made by passing current through a coil of wire wound around an iron core

electron

the part of an atom that carries a negaƟve charge

ELI

an acronym used to remember that voltage (E) in an inducƟve (L) circuit leads current (I) or current

lags voltage

EMF

abbreviaƟon for electromoƟve force

EMI

abbreviaƟon for electromagneƟc interference

EMT

abbreviaƟon for electrical metallic tubing (thin‐wall conduit)

end bell

the plate at the end of a motor that supports the bearings; also called an end shield or end plate

energize

to supply power or electron flow to an electrical circuit

Energy Efficiency RaƟo (EER)

the number of Btu produced per waƩ of electrical power consumed by an air condiƟoner
