Electrical Theory & Applications for HVACR

induced current

current that flows as the result of an induced voltage

induced voltage

potenƟal that causes current to flow in a conductor that passes through a magneƟc field

inductance

property of a circuit that allows energy to be stored in a magneƟc field

inducƟve circuit

any circuit that contains at least one magneƟc field

insulaƟon

materials with few free electrons used to cover wires to prevent short circuits and shock hazards

integrated circuit

a circuit with mulƟple semiconductors and transistors in a single circuit; someƟmes called a chip

ion

an atom that has gained or lost electrons, resulƟng in a posiƟve or negaƟve charge

J

jacket

the outside cover of a wire or cable

juncƟon box (j box)

a plasƟc or metal box where electrical connecƟons are made

jogging

quickly and repeatedly switching a motor on and off

joule

the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water 1°C; equal to one waƩ

second

jumper

a wire placed across the contacts of a component for test purposes

juncƟon

a point in an electrical circuit where the current branches out into other secƟons

K

Kirchoff’s Current Law

the sum of the currents flowing into any point or juncƟon of a circuit is equal to the sum of the

currents flowing away from that point
